Met Gala 2017 | 5 Fashion Trends

Wednesday, 3 May 2017

The Met Gala is one of the most important, if not the most, fashion event of the year; Just like fashion weeks, it has as much influence on fashion trends. It's kind of like celebrities playing 'dress up' and competing for the most extravagant look. This year's theme was Rei Kawakubo the founder of Comme des Garcons. Some celebrities paid tribute to the designer herself by wearing Comme des Garcons pieces, while others were inspired by the ethos of the fashion house which is 'fashion that challenges convention'.

In the midst of all the extravagance, different clothing architectures and different fabrics and materials trends can be still made out after analysis all outfits. Following my very own analysis after hours of looking at all the outfits in great awe, I made out 5 trends that were almost screaming at us.

Rihanna - Comme des Garcons / Janelle Monae - Ralph & Russo / Anna Wintour - Chanel

3D Dresses. You need know glasses to see some of the outfits coming at you. The most evident one was in fact Rihanna's Comme De Garcons dress with Dsquared2 sandals. On the more elegant side of adding 3D effects to outfits there was Anna Wintour in a gorgeous Chanel gown. With a layer of feathers over her gold embellished dress and with a tulle hem, she looked as if she just came out of 'Swan Lake' floating on the red carpet.

Joan Smalls - Topshop / Rita Ora - Marchesa / Selena Gomez - Coach

Red & Pink. Selena Gomez's subtle pink cami floral dress in satin with lace trimmings by Coach was one of the simplest dresses of the evening but most stunning in my opinion. It was also the perfect dress to wear for her red carpet debut with The Weeknd. Selena Gomez, we approve! Rita Ora's dress by Marchesa with massive bows (yes that is Rita Ora not a Christmas gift) was a mash of both colours by having blush pink tulle inserts at the bottom of the red, ribbon like gown. Many more wore gowns in those shades. Too many, in fact, that I could not put them all in an edit.

Kylie Jenner - Atelier Versace / Kendall Jenner - La Perla / Chrissy Teigen - Marchesa

Sheer. Sheer dresses were as common as red & pink. Even Halle Berry went sheer in an Atelier Versace gown. Also wearing Atelier Versace, Kylie Jenner wore a nude embellished column dress which was very sheer but she did opt to wear full coverage underwear. Kendall, on the other hand, left very little to the imagination as she wore a lace thong under her sheer La Perla dress. Not to mention Bella Hadid's Alexander Wang outfit also exposing her bum. Chrissy Teigen who just gave the 'sheer party' a bit more class. Wearing a Marchesa black and white embroidered high neck dress with a sheer skirt and train, she simply looked stunning.

Dakota Johnson - Gucci / Felicity Jones - Erdem / Katie Holmes - Zac Posen

Ruffles. If I was a celebrity at the Met Gala (maybe one day in a parallel universe) I would have definitely had ruffles in my gown. I'm happy some stars were representing us who love ruffles. Felicity Jones' Erdem gown, although not my favourite, is one of them. Essentially made from tulle like textures the ruffles gave the dress a more flowy look. Katie Holmes also paraded some bigger ruffles in her figure hugging gown by Zac Posen. Her ruffles were more of a statement adding to the curvy look.

Hailee Steinfield - Vera Wang / Jourdan Dunn - H&M / Gigi Hadid - Tommy Hilfiger

Off-Shoulder. This spring summer trend is a main feature of our updated wardrobes and it also was on the Met Gala red carpet. Hailee Steinfield chose a bold and edgy look by wearing a black dip hemmed dress by Vera Wang which she wore with boots. Her dress had long sleeves, long enough to cover her hands, but had cold shoulder cuts. The goddess, however, was Gigi Hadid in Tommy Hilfiger. She looked stunning, almost like a hybrid of a Greek goddess and a warrior, in the one shoulder, asymmetric dress.

All these trends are main spring summer 2017 trends, so if you weren't convinced before about this season's trends maybe now you are. However I advice against going out with your bum exposed. I'm not sure what the law says but I have a feeling you might be arrested. Go over to Vogue to see all outfits of the night. You will not regret it.
